Reiki Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can you tell me more about Reiki? How does it work?

Reiki is a form of energy healing where the healer places her or his hands on your body and channels universal energy through him- or herself into you.

The Reiki energy goes wherever it is needed most in your body or energy system. Reiki energy can help heal you physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, and can contribute to wellness on all those levels.

Is Reiki a religion? Does it work with all religions and forms of spirituality?

The energy used in Reiki is the energy that composes everything in the universe. Reiki is not a religion, nor is it associated with any particular religion. People of all religious, spiritual, and philosophical systems can receive Reiki healing.

Where did you get your Reiki training?

I received my Reiki training at Gorham Whole Health, studying under Reiki Master Kristen Watson beginning in 2003. Kristen is there for me as ongoing support while I continue to build my Reiki practice. She was trained in the Traditional Usui Reiki system and is part of the unbroken spiritual lineage of that tradition.

Will Reiki heal me?

Reiki is a wonderful support for healing of any illness, disease, or injury, or as a way to relax and help relieve stress. It can also help support you during times of personal turmoil, change, or indecision. Reiki healing is not a replacement for other types of medical or wellness care, but complements it well. I have done Reiki for people recovering from surgery, undergoing treatment for cancer, and healing from a serious car accident. Reiki will work with any other types of treatment you might be receiving, from chemotherapy to medications to physical therapy. In addition to healing, it helps relax and restore your energy system while you are going through the healing process.

Reiki is good for supporting your ongoing mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness. If you're trying to make important decisions, grieving the loss of a loved one, or coping with changes in your life, receiving Reiki will assist and support you in these endeavors. Reiki is also great to include as part of your overall focus on health and wellness. Regular Reiki sessions will help you stay relaxed and focused on what is most important to you.

How many Reiki sessions do I need?

The number and frequency of sessions I recommend is based on your individual situation. One session can help you get back to feeling centered. Monthly or bi-monthly sessions are a great support for general wellness. If you're in the midst of an illness or recovering from an injury, you may wish to schedule more frequent sessions as you go through the most intense part of your healing journey. Contact me to consult about your specific needs.

Does Reiki involve physical contact, like massage?

You lie on the massage table, fully clothed (you might wish to wear loose clothing and remove your shoes, for comfort) while I place my hands on your head, neck, abdomen, legs, feet, and back in a series of prescribed positions. If you have a particular injury or area of concern, you can request that I put my hands directly on that area.

Reiki is not massage. I will place my hands gently on your body, holding each pose for about 3-5 minutes to allow the energy to flow through my hands into your body. If you're uncomfortable with direct touch, I can also hold my hands just above your body, which will still allow the energy to flow.

Are there any reasons why I wouldn't be able to receive a Reiki session?

There are no contraindications to receiving Reiki, but you should be able to lie down comfortably for about an hour. If you're unable to lie on your back or stomach, we can arrange pillows so that you can still relax and receive Reiki while honoring your body's needs.

How should I prepare for my Reiki session?

Before the session, you might want to eat only lightly and dress in comfortable clothing. The Reiki session should take place in a room where we will be undisturbed. Turn off your phone or other devices during your Reiki session, so you can let go and fully relax.

How will I feel during my Reiki session?

You will feel relaxed, and my hands will most likely feel warm to you. If you are sensitive to energy, you might feel the Reiki moving throughout your body. Your job is to simply breathe and relax, enjoying the experience of healing.

How will I feel after my Reiki session?

After your Reiki session, you will feel relaxed and possibly sleepy. Your body will need time to rest and integrate the healing energy you've just received. Be sure to drink plenty of water after your session. You should allow yourself plenty of time to move gently back into your day, or perhaps head off to bed.

How do I pay you for the session?

I accept cash or personal checks at the time of the session, or you may pay in advance on the day of your session, using PayPal (COMING SOON!). At this time, I do not accept credit or debit cards (except through PayPal).
